What infomercial services does your company provide?
ONYX offers full production services including concept and script development, casting, location scouting, equipment sourcing, director and crew for filming or taping, E-commerce and E-fomercials-plus complete post-production. With hundreds of traditional TV commercials to our credit, we have the production know-how infomercial marketers need. We have produced national and local spots and corporate videos for clients such as Budweiser, Chevrolet, Mercedes-Benz, Suzuki, RAM Golf, Monsanto, Cherokee Clothes, KFC, White Castle and Alberto Culver. We know the requirements of working in both film and tape. We've operated with big budgets and small. We also are experienced at walking advertisers through the other steps of infomercial marketing-media buying, fulfillment, duplication, and telemarketing.
How long have you been in the infomercial business?
We did our first infomercial nine years ago, while our short-form experience goes back over 18 years.
What are some of your shows or spots - past and present?
In long form, Gary Player Gran Prix Irons; Ron Popeil's Automatic Pasta Maker; Premeir Reduce Fat-Fast; Pre-paid Legal Services; NordicTrack; Matthew Lesko's Info Power II. In short form, Hoover, Kaiser, It's a Date, Mojave Magic, Norton AntiVirus 5.0, Smart Mop '96, ThighMaster Plus, and more.
What was your first infomercial?
As RMP Productions, we produced Ron Popeil's GLH Formula #9 with Jim Rose as Director. We went on to do the
Popeil Pasta Maker.
What made it special?
Its believability - the key to success with any infomercial for any type of product. The uniqueness of the product and the show's dynamic format prompted wonderful testimonials from the audience. Sales points were made repeatedly, but in an easy conversational way. Audience reactions to Popeil's demonstrations, along with his own enthusiasm, convinced viewers to buy. Also, this show simply was fun to watch.
What is your infomercial production philosophy?
When producing infomercials, unlike traditional TV ads, we have to be more aware of the advertiser's marketing goals. It's just not enough to execute well. We have to make the viewer not only recognize a product name, but motivate that person to place an order or make an inquiry or go into a dealer showroom. Whatever the sales objective, everything we do on camera must be aimed at the call to action. It's a much more interesting challenge.
What are your strengths as an infomercial producer?
Our ability to produce quality productions for reasonable budgets. We believe that the money advertisers spend should show up on the screen, not on our expense accounts. We enjoy finding the most cost-effective methods for producing each job and our years of doing short-form DR spots have made us experts at budgeting and problem-solving. We apply that same thinking to long-form production. One of the ways we control costs is by keeping our in-house staff to a minimum, and developing a group of top freelance talent. This allows us to call on the right people for each project, and lets us offer advertisers more competitive pricing without sacrificing quality.
Why did you get into the infomercial business?
Frankly, to expand our business. We'd already produced a great many direct response TV spots and were believers in the effectiveness of DR advertising, whether long-form infomercials or short-form spots. We liked the fact that the results were measurable. And now, as bigger advertisers are doing infomercials, it's clear that they will remain key components in consumer marketing.
Does your production work take you outside the infomercial industry?
Yes. ONYX works with ad agencies to produce TV commercials and corporate videos, as we've done for many years. This background has given us the ability to produce effectively for DRTV clients.
